A note on pricked ears (Chamfa ears)
"Chamfa" stands for a pair of decorative triangular ornament used to decorate the small family shrine in each household. A religious display common in Guangdong province. The Chinese use this auspicious symbol to name this type of ear for their Shar-pei represents acceptance and respect for this original and primitive canine trait. In short, Chamfa ear is accepted as a natural occurrence when breeding Shar-Pei, but definitely not a preferred ear for Shar-pei.
Although Chamfa ears are not wanted as a feature for Shar-Pei, however, according to experienced breeder in Hong Kong and China, they will not hesitate to keep a Chamfa ear Shar-Pei if all the other traditional bone mouth features are of exceptionally good quality.
This is because Shar-Pei being regarded as a type of Tang dog itself. A Chamfa ear Shar-Pei will continue to produce Clam Shell or Fungus ear Shar-Pei as long as it is bred within Clam Shell or Fungus ears. Although, sometimes, two Clam Shell ear cross can still produce a Chamfa ear once in a while, this is does not affect the overall heredity of the breed.

 This is a small home shrine which many Chinese in southern China keep inside their home or at the door step just outside the house on the floor.
 Dai Fan Shu was a very famous Shar-pei in the fighting ring in the 1960"s. Besides his spirit, he had a pair of pricked ears. Pricked ears although not acceptable in the breed standard, however, it is known and understood by breeders here in Hong Kong and China that a good traditional Shar-Pei although with pricked ears can be used as breeding base for a good traditional Shar-Pei.
Although quite rare, it indeed appears from time to time as hereditary trait. If bred properly with normal ear Shar-Pei, a pricked year dog will give back normal ears in the next generation .
 A Chamfa seen separately. Chamfa is the pair of triangular decorative ornaments placed at the top of the shrine. Because of its shape, the pricked Shar-pei ears are also named as Chamfa ears.
 This is a black Tang dog with pricked ears. The tail and the coat differentiate it from a Shar-Pei.
