The Burgoyne Prefix was first registered in England in 1960 to breed the world-famous Burgoyne Boxers and thoroughbred horses. When attention turned to breeding and improving Shar-Pei, the same technique was used on the 2 imports selected to start the line. Over the years, Burgoyne imported 17 dogs from U.S., Hong Kong, and other places, concentrating on the traditional type of Shar-Pei, all these imports were selected for health, conformation and temperament.
In 1973 when Mr. Matgo Law first appeal to the Americans to save the Chinese Shar-Pei and ignited the fire and frenzy of Shar-Pei around the world. But as all history developed with a twist, the trend developed into a totally different unexpected direction as testified by Mr. Wai Kee Shun. All along these years of up-hill struggle to preserve the traditional Shar-Pei, Ms. Pat Pearce has more than any one else sacrificed her time and effort into this historical moment. She resisted the market force of the meat mouth, rejected the temptation of economic return, and stood staunchly on the side of history and tradition to treat Shar-Pei in its natural and original form.
Ms. Pat Pearce, the owner of the kennel is the founding member of the Shar-Pei Club of Great Britain and started the first Shar-Pei magazine (The Wrinkle) in 1983. When the Midland Shar-Pei Club was formed in July 1992, she was made their President and Adviser. ¡§Without Pat Pearce there would be no Midland Shar-Pei Club and certainly no Lana Tsan in Midland Shar-Pei Club to make the connection with the town of Dailet -- the original place for Shar-Pei¡¨ (NASA letter to Midland Shar Pei Club, Simply Shar Pei, Spring 2003, magazine Issue 34, p30.)
In quest of history and tradition, Ms. Pat Pearce made countless trips to China over the years. The materials and information she obtained through these investigatory journeys remained tremendously valuable today in the history of traditional Shar-Pei.
In 1992, on one of her visits to China and Hong Kong, she first met Mr. Nelson Lam, who had been working with the Hong Kong Kennel Club (HKKC) to improve the registrations of Shar-Pei. She persuaded him to form the first Shar-Pei breed club in Hong Kong. "The Hong Kong Shar-Pei Club" is now affiliated with the HKKC.
Her ambition is "to see that traditional hunting Shar-Pei from Dali (sometimes pronounced Dai Lack, Tai Leh, etc.) imported into Britain. This will not be possible until more Chinese register their dogs and the B registration they have at present can be changed to Export registration, which the British Kennel Club will accept.
It is not an exaggeration to say that Burgoyne forms a part of traditional type Shar-Pei history. Ms. Pat Pearce not only recorded, testified, but also catalyzed the development of Shar-Pei itself in China. Her place in the history of traditional Shar-Pei is not merely as an observer but also a part of the history itself.
